A Mexican welcome for whales in MayanPalace

Posted on Monday 12 November 2007

Mexico has a strict law to protect in all its seas (around three million of squared kilometers that include Pacific Ocean Atlantic and The Caribbean); becoming in the major sanctuary in the world for these mammals. A lot of the 17 thousand grey whales, which travel annually from Strait of Bering, make their reproduction cycle in Mexican waters from the middle of January to the beginning of April. Grey whales make their triumphal entry to Mexican coasts by Baja California, passing for Cabo San Lucas to enter into California Gulf. These whales would rather arrive to some places as Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, decreed whale refuge in 1972, located in Pacific coast just in the middle of Baja California. This zone is inside of El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, just like San Ignacio Lagoon, other of the whale’s favorite places.
Different kind of ships, with a special permission, transport tourists in little tours to see the activity of the whales, it is also possible to watch the babies of the whales when they are learning to swim; in fact this is one of the most important reasons of the migration, the scientists explain it because the climate and salinity of Mexican seas permit more floatability.
